Biography
Buckley Belanger was first elected to the Saskatchewan Legislature in 1995 and re-elected in 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011.
In the previous NDP government, he served as Minister of Environment, Northern Affairs, Community Resources and Highways and Transportation.
Prior to entering provincial politics, Buckley served three terms as mayor of Ile-a-la Crosse from 1988 to 1994. He has also worked as a journalist with the Aboriginal publication New Breed and a programmer, producer and administrator with the Missinipi Broadcasting Corporation in La Ronge.
In the Saskatchewan NDP Caucus, Buckley serves as Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Critic for Environment, Forestry, Highways and Infrastructure, SaskTel and the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority.
He and his wife Beckie have three daughters Michelle, Kellie and Taylor.
Constituency Description
Located in the extreme northwest corner of the province, this constituency is geographically one of the largest ridings in Saskatchewan. The major industries in the constituency of Athabasca are tourism, mineral extraction, forestry, commercial fishing and trapping.
The Cluff Lake uranium mine is located in this constituency, as well as the Athabasca Sand Dunes Provincial Park and the Clearwater River Provincial Park.
