Constituency Description
This constituency is located in south central Saskatchewan. Its primary economic activities are grain and pulse farming, cattle, elk and bison ranching, as well as a 10,000-head cattle feedlot, five 10,000-head feeder hog barns, and a farrow-to-finish hog barn. A number of fabrication plants and a large pulse processing plant are also located here.
This constituency contains the Grasslands National Park, which preserves the broad Frenchman River Valley, as well as buttes, badlands and natural grasslands.
The major communities are Assiniboia and Gravelbourg with populations of 2,483 and 1,187 respectively. The name of Assiniboia was taken from the Aboriginal name that the First Nations gave to the area. The name means, "one who cooks with stones." The area where Assiniboia is now located was a traditional meeting area. It is now the center of the largest trading area in south central Saskatchewan.
