Rainbow Pride

The Rainbow Pride Committee is an official wing of the Saskatchewan NDP and represents gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, two-spirited and questioning members of the party along with their families, friends and allies. Established in March 2008, the purpose of the Pride Committee is to:

  1. Outreach: Establish and maintain effective two-way communication between the New Democratic Party and Saskatchewan’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, two-spirited and questioning (GLBT2Q) communities.
  2. Promotion: Promote the policies and activities of the New Democratic Party within Saskatchewan’s GLBT2Q communities.
  3. Policy Development: Plan and develop policy initiatives on issues of concern to GLBT2Q people for the consideration of the New Democratic Party convention and council.
  4. Safe Space: Provide a “safe space” within the New Democratic Party where GLBT2Q members can discuss their concerns in a secure environment.
  5. Public Education: Work in partnership with other GLBT2Q organizations, and other New Democratic Party members, to increase public awareness and understanding of issues of concern to GLBT2Q people.

Membership

  • Any GLBT2Q person who is a member of the Saskatchewan NDP is automatically a member of the Pride Committee
  • Saskatchewan NDP members who are family, friends and allies of the GLBT2Q community are automatically members of the Pride Committee
  • Any GLBT2Q person who is not a member of the Saskatchewan NDP may participate in the activities of the Pride Committee but cannot participate in elections or hold office in the organization.

Decision Making

  • The Pride Committee holds an annual meeting at the same time and place as the annual Saskatchewan NDP Provincial Convention. The annual meeting is the governing body of the Pride Committee and the venue for amending the bylaws and electing an executive.
  • The table officers of the Pride Committee executive are composed of two co-chairs, four vice-presidents, a secretary, a treasurer and four representatives to various councils and governing bodies of the provincial NDP.
  • Other members of the executive include past Co-Chairs and representatives from other committees and branches of the federal and provincial NDP.
